the future“We may not know what the future holds, but we know who holds the future.” ~ Anonymous
I have heard that quote a number of times in my life and as we begin a new calendar year, it seems an appropriate phrase to repeat and reflect on.
For those of us who are planners, we often need this reminder that we are not in control. My organizational skills and passion for a well-thought out plan used to be much more intense. I have mellowed in my old age —more through my travels and the experiences that constantly remind me that the best-made plans never work out how we want anyway. Also, because I am not, never have been, nor should I be, in control. The future is an unknown. And that’s okay.
Some level of planning, preparation, and goal setting for our future is healthy, but the more important aspect of the above quote isn’t about the future, but rather about the knowing.
This month, we will focus on the theme of Knowing God. No matter what else this year brings, knowing God should be at the center of it. No matter what else we think we know, it pales in comparison to knowing the Creator and Director of our lives. No matter what we plan or desire, the greatest desire of our heart should be to know our Father.
What does it mean for you to know God? How have you come to know Him in the past and how can you come to know Him more, starting today?
