belt of truthI forgot my belt at home the other day. And I was not wearing a pair of pants that made that okay. I spent the whole day distracted by my sagging pants. I couldn’t walk as quickly and had to take extra time to take care of my clothes.
My mild annoyance does not compare with the necessity of a belt as reflected in Ephesians 6:14.
In Bible times, a belt was an even more vital part of the wardrobe. The belt, sash, or girdle, was wrapped around the waist, and held the wearer’s clothes in place. It allowed the person to move around, walk, and even run, freely. Imagine trying to cook, walk, or carry something while also holding up your robes.
When the belt is firmly in place, we are free to do what we need to do, unencumbered. We are not distracted by the constant need to keep everything in its place.
When the belt of truth is firmly in place, we are free to live an unencumbered, abundant life that God offers. We are not distracted by the constant need to determine what is or isn’t right, or how things should be. Everything is already in its true place.
Paul’s description of the truth as a belt, however, was not solely a great lesson for the average person. For a warrior, the belt of truth is the first piece of defensive armor described as part of the armor of God. The belt held other parts of the armor in place, but also served as a sheath for the one offensive piece of armor: the sword.
Can you imagine running into battle without your belt? You could maybe make it work for a time, but as soon as you confront the enemy, you realize that by forgetting your belt, neither do you have your sword.
What is the importance of truth for our daily lives? Do we recognize how things go wrong when truth is not firmly established?
Over the next few weeks, we will examine the blessing and importance of truth, especially as it serves as a powerful defense against Satan´s lies.
