In preparation for our August theme: Fear or Faith?, I want to share a story from about a year ago...
My nephew was playing on the floor with his cars while I was eating my dinner. A storm was brewing and the wind was blowing. There was thunder, but no lightning or rain yet. Thunderstorms are not as common in Denver, where we lived at the time, as they are in Louisiana, where I grew up. So, I began to explain thunder, lightning, and storms in a way that a two-and-a-half-year-old could understand.
Kadesh was graciously listening with an occasional acknowledgement of my words, but he was mostly paying attention to his cars—until a train came by.
“Aunt M, I scared.” Kadesh gathered his cars and trotted across the kitchen to come sit in my lap.
“Why are you scared?”
“The train.”
“You like trains. Why did the train scare you?”
“I scared,” was all he would repeat as he snuggled in my arms.
For me, it didn’t matter what had scared him or why he was scared. I wasn’t going to reprimand him for being scared. He knew where he could go to be comforted and I delighted in his snuggles and trust in me.
It brought about a moment of clarity for me... Sometimes I beat myself up for being scared. But God doesn’t reprimand me for my fear—instead, he longs for me to go to him with my fears in order to be truly comforted. He relishes the moments when we come to him, curl up in his lap, and rest our heads on his chest, trusting in the one who can protect us from whatever we are afraid of.
Take a moment today to bring to God whatever you are fearful of. He will not reprimand you for your fears, but rather rejoice in the fact that you allowed your trust in him to be greater than your fear.
Even if it is wrong to fear, what better way to overcome our fears than to go to the one who is greater than all our fears?!
