My yard was a jungle and in need of desperate attention. Yes, there were valid reasons why it had reached this level of extreme neglect: travel, rain, and other commitments... but the time had come for the grass to be cut and for it to look like someone lived here and cared for the place.
However, it would have to wait at least one more day. Each raindrop seemed to fuel my feelings of guilt that I didn’t take advantage of the few hours of sunshine the evening before.
You see, after the grass reached a certain height, it was almost easier to put it off and let it grow another day. “It’s already this bad. What’s one more day?”
Now, before you make any judgments on my yard skills or priorities, allow me a reflection on a spiritual level.
Bad patterns and habits can get away from us more quickly than a yard of overgrown grass. We allow the weeds of our life to grow and once we feel like they have gotten out of hand, it can be easier to think, “It’s already this bad. What’s one more day?”
This kind of dangerous thinking will have us falling into the trap of apathy and the wrong kind of contentment. We grow accustomed to the horrible conditions and bad habits that we forget the beauty that lies beneath—a beauty that only the Divine Gardener can reveal when we allow him to cut, trim, and clean.
And just like my yard does better in the summer when I don’t let the growth get out of hand, God’s trimming and pruning in my life are much easier when I allow him to work in me and through me on a regular basis.
Is your life currently a neglected jungle, a well-trimmed yard, or somewhere in between? What work do you need to allow the Divine Gardener to do in your life today?
