Redemption is sweeter after the bitterness of sin has been tasted. We cannot truly understand the depth and magnitude of salvation until we comprehend the ugliness from which we have been saved.
The audience on the day of Pentecost had no idea that they had crucified their Savior. And when, through Peter’s sermon, they realized their grievous error, they were cut to the heart and were compelled to act.
36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”
37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.” (Acts 2:36-39)
As the story continues, we see that more than three thousand were baptized that day. Their conviction led them to action. They hungered for repentance of their sins and the powerful gift of the Holy Spirit that had already been witnessed earlier that day, by Peter and the other apostles being able to speak to each of them in their native tongue.
The best part of the story in Acts 2 is found in verse 39: this promise holds true for us today. We are given the opportunity to repent, be baptized, have our sins forgiven, and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
